Having been a wildlife rehabilitator for almost a decade and during that time rescuing, rehabilitating and raising orphaned bats, I was always fascinated by these incredible animals. What saddened me was the fact that so many people had pre-conceived negative opinions that bats are disease ridden, smelly, disgusting pests. As well as having an ‘image problem’, many of our native bat species are experiencing significant population declines. I wanted to help showcase the beauty of these creatures, their important environmental roles as well as highlight the issues they face to try and gain public support for their conservation as well as dispel some of these long held and inaccurate misconceptions.
Working with a talented team of individuals I directed and produced a short documentary, Hanging in the Balance, which portrays these amazing animals for what they really are. The film gives a fascinating insight into the lives of bats and introduces some of the passionate and committed individuals fighting for their protection.
